Europe’s first 5G railway terminal is being built in Hungary

A completely unique development in railway logistics begins at the East-West Gate (EWG) intermodal combi terminal in Fényeslitke, Hungary.

The investment is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2022. It will be the first smart rail logistics terminal on the continent to use its own 5G network. 

Europe’s largest smart rail logistics terminal also excels in internal communications and the operation of technological tools.

This is because they will operate their own 5G network. The private 5G network will be installed by Vodafone Hungary and Huawei Technologies Hungary, writes vg. The installation is based on the needs of the investor East-West Intermodal Logistics Service Ltd. The hardware required for the development is provided by Huawei, while platform and network support is provided by Vodafone Hungary. The development is a significant milestone in two areas: in the field of domestic 5G developments on the one hand, and in the field of digitalisation of rail freight on the other hand.

In all respects, the EWG will be the rail logistics hub of the 21st century.

There are many ways to use a 5G network. One example of this is that, for the first time in the world, 5G technology will be used to remotely control land terminal giant cranes. Giant cranes are fully automatic and capable of even quite subtle movements, writes index.hu.

“With the construction of the East-West Gate, Hungary will return to the map of international rail logistics and will once again have the opportunity to actively engage in rail freight transport between Asia and Europe,” said János Tálosi, CEO of East-West Intermodal Logistics Ltd. Tálosi added that the most advanced technology is used in the terminal, so the delivery will be faster and more accurate.

In Fényeslitke, the construction of 85 hectares began in January 2021.

Thanks to the investment, Hungary aims to be a key player in continental freight traffic between Asia and Europe. The terminal handles up to 1 million 20-foot containers (TEU) annually. It is important to highlight that the facility operates with green technology.
